【解説】
市議会議員に立候補した切手コイン商の選挙活動に密着した『選挙』で、ドキュメンタリー界に新風を吹き込んだ想田和弘監督の第2作目。音楽なし・ナレーションなし・説明なしという“観察映画” のスタイルで、精神科診療所に通う患者たち、スタッフたちの姿を淡々と映し出す。
岡山県岡山市にある精神科診療所“こらーる岡山”。その代表をつとめる山本昌知医師のもとに、様々な患者がやって来る。リストカットを繰り返し、死にたいと泣き崩れる女性。10代で発病した男性は、写真や詩で自己表現を試みている。また別の患者は、料理を習い自活を目指しながらも、老後の不安を山本医師に打ち明ける。一方、診療所の事務スタッフたちは、医療コスト削減のため次々とサービスを廃止してくる行政側に抵抗し、連日のように攻防戦を繰り広げている。そんな中、国会では障害者自立支援法案が通過しようとしており、患者もスタッフも危機感を募らせていた。

[ Story ]
The second film from Soda Kazuhiro, who ushered in a new style of documentary filmmaking with Campaign, which followed a stamp and coin seller who ends up running for city council. In Mental, Soda’s “observational style,” which eschews music, narration and explanations, captures the patients and staff at a mental health clinic in a matter-of-fact manner.
The Chorale Okayama mental health clinic in Okayama City, where patients from all walks of life seek help from head doctor Yamamoto Masatomo. A woman repeatedly slits her wrists and wants to die breaks down in tears; A man afflicted with mental health issues since his teens attempts to express himself through photography and poetry; Another patient aiming to become more independent by learning to cook frankly conveys his anxieties about growing old. On the other hand, the clinic staff wage what seems like a daily battle with a government bureaucracy that aims to reduce medical care costs by cutting services. Meanwhile, a legislative bill regarding support for persons with disabilities moving through the Diet raises even more concern for the clinic employees and patients alike.
