昭和 37 年、瀬戸内海に面した備後市。運送業者で働くヤス（阿部 寛）は、今日も元気にオート三輪を暴走させていた。愛妻・美佐子（麻生久美子）の妊娠に嬉しさを隠せず、姉貴分のたえ子（薬師丸ひろ子）や幼馴染の照雲（安田 顕）に茶化される日々。幼い頃に両親と離別したヤスにとって家庭を築けるということはこの上ない幸せだった。遂に息子・アキラ（北村匠海）が誕生し「とんびが鷹を生んだ」と皆口々に騒ぎ立てた。しかしようやく手に入れた幸せは、妻の事故死で無残にも打ち砕かれてしまう。こうして、父子二人きりの生活が始まる。母の死を理解できないアキラに、自分を責めるヤス。和尚の海雲（麿 赤兒）は、アキラに皆が母親代わりなってやると説き、雪が降っても黙って呑み込む広い海のようにアキラに悲しみを降り積もらすな―「お前は海になれ」と、ヤスに叱咤激励するのであった。親の愛を知らずして父になったヤスは、仲間達に助けられながら、我が子の幸せだけを願い、不器用にも愛し育て続けた。そんなある日、誰も語ろうとしない母の死の真相を知りたがるアキラに、ヤスは大きな嘘をついた──。

Yasuo (Hiroshi Abe) grew up as an orphan. He married a woman he loved and they had a son Akira (later played by Takumi Kitamura). Yasuo’s life seemed great at the time, but his life totally changed after his wife died in accident. Since that time, Yasuo, who never experienced parents’ love himself, has to raise his son Akira alone.

Deliveryman Yasu (Abe Hiroshi) was orphaned as a young kid and is awkward but cares deeply for his family. His beloved wife gives birth to their son Akira, but she dies in an accident. He devotes himself to raising his son with the heartfelt support of people in town. Time passes, and Akira (Kitamura Takumi) decides to move to Tokyo for college. Overwhelmed by sadness at losing his son, Yasu pushes him away.
