巨匠・篠田正浩監督の引退作。ナチス党員のジャーナリストを装いながら、実は共産主義者のスパイとして日独の機密をソ連へ流していたドイツ人ゾルゲと、彼に共鳴して協力者となった朝日新聞記者・尾崎の交流と葛藤を綴る。「トゥームレイダー」のI・グレンが軽妙なムードたっぷりにゾルゲ役を演じたほか、本木雅弘、椎名桔平、小雪、そして監督の公私にわたるパートナーでもある岩下志麻など豪華なキャストがそろった。昭和初期の上海や日本を再現した美術も見どころだ。
世の中が戦争へと動きつつあった1930年代。上海支社に赴任した朝日新聞記者・尾崎は、ナチス党員のジャーナリスト、ゾルゲと出会う。だが、ゾルゲの本当の姿は、ソ連の諜報員だった。やがてゾルゲはドイツの特派記者として来日し、ドイツ大使館を拠点として諜報活動を進めてゆく。そんな中、帰国していた尾崎はゾルゲと再会、日本の現状に疑問を抱いていた尾崎はゾルゲの語る理想に共感を覚え、彼に協力することになるが……。

【解説】
篠田正浩監督が構想10年、製作費20億円を投入して完成させた超大作。
昭和16年、ふたりの男が逮捕される。世界を震撼させるほどのスパイ組織の中心人物リヒャルト・ゾルゲ(イアン・グレン)と、彼に情報を提供していた新聞記者・尾崎秀実(本木雅弘)である。ふたりは8年前上海で出会い、後に日本にやってきたゾルゲに尾崎は協力していた。ナチ党員を装い、大使館にもぐりこむゾルゲ。数々の情報を盗み出しモスクワへ発信し続ける彼のもとに、尾崎によってひとつの重要な情報がもたらされる。「日本軍はソ連に侵攻する意志がない」。これで役目を終え、故郷に帰れると喜ぶゾルゲだったが、ある日、尾崎ら仲間と時を同じくして捕らえられてしまう。昭和19年11月、ゾルゲは処刑された。彼らの死後まもなく、戦争は終わりを迎えた。

A foreign spy using the Sorge alias is assigned to Tokyo the capital of Japan just prior to the outbreak of World War II and in the midst of the Japanese imperial ambitions in Eastern Asia. The spy becomes acquainted with a sympathetic communist who like he is attached to the ideals of freedom and rule of the masses. Sorge is able to feed the Soviet Union useful information regarding the Axis allies and their movements in Asia and beyond.

Shinoda Masahiro’s spectacular film, a decade in the planning and produced at a budget of two billion yen.
In the 16th year of the Showa Era (1941), two men are arrested – Dr. Richard Sorge (Ian Glen), who is a key figure in the espionage organization which has startled the world, and journalist Osaki Hotsumi (Motoki Masahiro), who has been Richard’s key informant. The pair first met in Shanghai eight years prior, and Hotsumi cooperated with Richard after he came to Japan. Born in Russia, but raised in Germany, Richard acts as a double agent under the guise of a Nazi, sending mostly useless information to Germany while transmitting sensitive data to his motherland of Russia. During one of his transmissions to Moscow, Richard receives an important piece of information from Hotsumi: the Japanese army doesn’t have the will to invade Russia. He believes he has finished his assignment and feels glad that he’ll finally be able to return home. However, one by one, he and his followers, including Hotsumi, are arrested on the same day. Three years later, in November, Richard is executed. Soon after his death, World War II comes to an end.
