一代で会社を作り、我侭放題に生きてきた大貫は、持病で入院していた。病院には、患者も医者も看護婦もクセのある者ばかりが集まっていた。その中で唯一、ピュアな心を持っていたのが、交通事故で入院した少女パコ。我侭な大貫だったが、パコの優しい心に打たれ、毎日、絵本を読み聞かせるように。しかし、事故の後遺症でパコの記憶が一日しか持たないと知った大貫は、パコのために絵本をお芝居にしようと病院の人々に呼びかける。

【解説】
原作は2004年に上演され話題となった、舞台作家・後藤ひろひとの『MIDSUMMER CAROL ガマ王子 vs ザリガニ 魔人』。ポップな色彩感覚が鮮烈な『下妻物語』『嫌われ松子の一生』の中島哲也が新しい解釈で映像化した。クライマックスの3DのCGと、実写のライブアクションの合成は日本の長編映画では初の試みである。
映画の舞台は、一代で会社を築いた自分勝手な大貫（役所広司）をはじめ、風変わりな人間ばかりがいる病院。そこには交通事故で両親を亡くし、自分も後遺症で一日しか記憶のもたなくなってしまった少女・パコ（アヤカ・ウィルソン）がいた。皆から嫌われていた大貫は、パコと交流することで温かい人間へとなっていく。毎朝起きるとその日は自分の7歳のお誕生日だと思ってお母さんがプレゼントしてくれた絵本を読むパコのために、大貫は病院のみんなを説得し、恒例の夏のクリスマスイベントでその絵本『ガマ王子対ザリガニ魔人』を演じることにする。

There once was a hospital where patients and even doctors & nurses were all weird. Above all, Onuki, a patient who built up his company all by himself from scratch, is a super cranky old man. One day, he meets up a girl called Paco, who cannot retain memory beyond one day due to a car accident. She is reading the same picture book everyday. Onuki starts bonding with Paco after some incident, and begins to doubt his way of living. He starts wanting to do something for Paco with his remaining life, and comes up with a brilliant idea. This pleases Paco, but their fate is?

Based on Midsummer Carol – Gama Oji vs Zarigani Majin, which was written by a playwright Goto Hirohito and performed in 2004 to great public acclaim. Director of Kamikaze Girls and Memories of Matsuko, both impressively pop-colored films, Nakashima Tetsuya has adapted this to a film with a fresh interpretation. The combination of the three-dimensional CG and live action in the climax is the first attempt of its kind in a feature film in Japan.
The story takes place at a hospital where people are all eccentric. Most of all, Onuki (Yakusho Koji) is a selfish old man who has built up a company in his lifetime. Also there is Paco (Ayaka Wilson), a girl whose memory is limited to one day at a time due to an accident. Onuki is disliked by everyone but he gradually becomes a warmer person as he interacts with Paco. Every morning when Paco wakes up, she is convinced that it is her 7th birthday and hence reads a picture book given to her by her mother as a present. Onuki persuades the people at the hospital and they decide to put on a performance of Gama Oji vs Zarigani Majin (The Toad Prince vs the Crayfish Magician) for Paco at the annual Christmas event in summer.
