1945年8月、樺太に暮らす女性てつは迫るソ連軍から逃れ、樺太に残る夫と再会を約束して息子たちを連れ網走に渡る。1971年。次男の修二郎はアメリカに渡って成功を収め、米国企業の日本支社長として帰国する。彼は15年ぶりにてつのもとを訪れるが、年老いた母親の姿にひとり暮らしが心もとなく思い、ふたたび母親と暮らすことを決意する。だが、てつは立派になった修二郎に迷惑を掛けたくないと網走に戻ろうとする。

【解説】
吉永小百合が主演する“北の三部作”の、『北の零年』『北のカナリアたち』に続く最終章。監督は『おくりびと』の滝田洋二郎。
1945年、樺太で暮らしていた江蓮てつ（吉永）は2人の息子を連れ、ソ連軍の侵攻から逃げるため島を脱出。北海道・網走へたどり着く。1971年、15年ぶりに網走を訪れた次男の修二郎（堺雅人）は、慎ましい生活を送る年老いたてつの面倒を見る決意をする。しかし、てつは戦禍によるPTSDの後遺症に陥ってしまい…。

The film follows the relationship between a mother and her son. In 1945, the mother played by Sayuri Yoshinaga fled with her two sons from the Russians to Hokkaido. In 1972, her son played by Masato Sakai returns to Japan after finding success in the U.S.

[ Story ]
Final film in the “northern trilogy” starring Yoshinaga Sayuri, following up on Year One in the North and A Chorus of Angels. Directed by Takita Yojiro of Departures.
In 1945, Ezure Tetsu (Yoshinaga) flees her home in Sakhalin with her two sons to escape the Soviet army invasion. They make it to Abashiri City, Hokkaido. In 1971, her younger son Shujiro (Sakai Masato) returns to Abashiri for the first time in fifteen years and resolves to care for the aging and impoverished Tetsu. However, Tetsu is besieged by the aftershocks of posttrauma stress disorder caused by wartime trauma.
