【解説】
4人の兄弟たちはアパートの一室へと引っ越してきた。父親の違う兄弟たちは、学校へも通わず、身を潜めて生活をしている。ある日母親が、家を出る。12歳になる長男(柳楽優弥)に年下の兄弟たちの面倒を見るようにと言い残して。見捨てられた少年たちは、小さな世界で、必死に生き抜こうとする。次第に残り少なくなっていく金、帰ってこない母親、まだ見ぬ外の世界への憧れ。次第にその生活はバランスを失っていく。周りの大人たちも手をさしのべてはくれず、力になってくれるのは長男とさして年の変わらぬ少女だけだ。ついに金は底をつき、食料もなくなってしまう。末の妹は体力の限界を迎え、事故をきっかけに静かに息を引き取る。長男と少女は、妹が憧れていた飛行機の見える飛行場へと彼女の遺体を埋葬しに行く。
主演の柳楽優弥が2004年カンヌ国際映画祭で史上最年少、日本人初の最優秀男優賞を受賞した。

[ Story ]
A mother (YOU) smuggles her four young children into their new home in an apartment complex. Each has a different father, and none of them go to school. One day, she announces that she has to leave for a while and puts the oldest boy, Akira (Yagira Yuya, Best Actor Award winner at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival), in charge. The kids are left to their own devices with only each other to rely on and avoid venturing outside in fear of being separated by welfare authorities. Akira does his best to scrounge food and water from the local neighborhood, but longs to make friends with other children his age. Adults turn a blind eye and offer little or no assistance. The children’s only outside ally is a young girl who befriends Akira. As time passes, their mother shows no sign of coming back, the money she has left them gradually dwindles away, and their survival becomes ever more uncertain.
